Karthika Menon (born 6 June 1986), better known by her stage nameBhavana, is an Indian film actress, who works in South Indian film industry. She has acted in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu language films, and has established herself as a bankable lead actress. Bhavana made her acting debut in the Malayalam film Nammal in 2002, for which she won the Kerala State Film Award – Special Mention. In a career spanning over a decade, she has appeared in over 75 films and has won two Kerala State Film Awards.

Early life

Bhavana was born as Karthika Menon on 6 June 1986 in Thrissur district, Kerala, as the daughter of Pushpa and assistant cinematographer G. Balachandran. She has an elder brother, Jayadev.[3][4] She studied at Holy Family Girls' High School, Chembukkavu, Thrissur.[citation needed]

Bhavana has described herself as a restless person and someone who's 'hard to handle'. She grew up with a dream to become an actress.[5] As a five-year-old, she used to imitate actress Amala's scenes from the Malayalam film Ente Sooryaputhrikku in front of the mirror and was even willing to jump from a building and break her arm, like Amala's character, did in the film.[5]

Career

At age 16,[5] she debuted in the Malayalam film Nammal taking the stage name Bhavana (Malayalam ഭാവന 'enlightenment, imagination') opposite newcomers Sidharth Bharathan, Jishnu and Renuka Menon. The film was a big success and she got several offers in Malayalam. She won many honors and a Kerala State Special Jury Award for the film. Bhavana was an 11th Standard student when she got her break in the film. .[6]

In 2010, she starred in her first Kannada film alongside Puneeth Rajkumar, Jackie which was a blockbuster. Following the film's huge success, the film was dubbed into Telugu and Malayalam.[7] Bhavana was said to star with Emraan Hashmi and Amitabh Bachchan in a Bollywood film.[8] Her second Kannada film Vishnuvardhana with Sudeep opened to a big response.[9] She appeared in the Malayalam films Ozhimuri and Trivandrum Lodge in 2012, and Honey Bee and Ezhamathe Varavu in 2013. She played Roshni Mathew, a single mother employed in an IT company, in Shyamaprasad's Ivide, a crime thriller based on the serial killing of IT techies in major US cities.[10][11]

In 2016, she starred in a film with Benedic Doray. Upcoming films of Bhavana include Swapnathekaal Sundaram and Adventures of Omanakuttan. Swapnathekaal Sundaram, touted to be an 'out-and-out family entertainer', will see her portraying a housewife and mother to a 9-year-old boy, while Adventures of Omanakuttan will feature her as Pallavi, a flamenco dancer.[12]

Bhavana got married to her long time boyfriend and Kannada film producer Naveen on 22 January 2018.[13][14][15][16]

Kidnap and sexual assault

On 17 February 2017, she was allegedly kidnapped and molested by a gang while travelling from work. The incident happened at night when she was moving from Thrissur to Kochi in her car when a van hit from behind near Athani, Angamaly. A brawl ensued between her driver Martin and the three van passengers, after which they pulled him aside and forcefully entered her vehicle keeping her hostage. They drove for two-and-a-half hours in the city, during which they sexually assaulted her and took pictures and filmed. Namitha Pramod (born 19 September 1996) is an Indian film actress, who appears in Malayalam films.[2] She made her acting debut in the Malayalam film Traffic.[3]

Early life and education[edit]

Namitha was born in Kumarakom as the daughter of Pramod, a businessman and Indu, a housewife.[4] She has a younger sister Akhita Pramod.[5] She did her schooling at Carmel Girls Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram.[6] She was enrolled at the St. Teresa's College to pursue a BA degree in Sociology in June 2014.[7] She has stated that she was 'not going to let [her] acting career compromise [her] studies'.[8]

Career[edit]

Namitha started acting when she was in seventh standard by taking on roles in serials such as Vellankanni Mathavu where she played the role of Mathavu, Amme Devi where she played the role of Devi and Ente Manasa Puthri where she played Anjali.[9][10] She made her debut in films when she acted as Riya, the dying daughter of Rahman and Lena, in Rajesh Pillai's critically acclaimed Traffic.[9] In her next film Puthiya Theerangal she played her first lead role, playing a fisherwoman, opposite Nivin Pauly.[6] It was followed by more lead roles in Sound Thoma with Dileep and Pullipulikalum Aattinkuttiyum with Kunchacko Boban in which she played a Mohiniyattam dancer.[11] She was not trained in Mohiniyattam and learned the dance steps in Saranya Mohan's dance school in Alappuzha for four days.[4] Both films were successful and she was selected as Top Star (Female) 2013 in Malayalam.[12]

In 2014, she was first seen in En Kadhal Pudhithu, her debut Tamil film directed by Maaris Kumar which had a delayed release,[13] followed by Lijin Jose's Law Point in which she played a modern, city bred girl named Maya.[14][15] In Lal Jose's Vikramadithyan, she played the role of Deepika, a Konkani girl, which required her to speak a few lines in Konkani, a language she had never used before. Her next film Villali Veeran, in which she paired once again with Dileep, had her playing the role of an ad filmmaker.[16] Her last release in 2014 was Ormayundo Ee Mukham, a romantic drama in which she was cast opposite Vineeth Sreenivasan.Her first release of 2015 was Chandrettan Evideya where she portrayed the role of Dr.Geethanjali along with Dileep and Anusree.her performance was critically acclaim and she went on to receive her first nomination at Filmfare for best supporting actress and also at SIIMA and IIFA Utsavam. Her next released Malayalam movie Amar Akbar Anthony starring Prithviraj, Jayasurya and Indrajith directed by popular stage artist Nadirshah where she played a role as a dancer was a blockbuster hit in Malayalam theatres.Her latest movie with Dhyan Sreenivasan was Adi Kapyare Kootamani directed by debutant John Varghese.The movie was declared superhit.

She has acted in many commercials of Bhima Jewellers, Francis Alukkas and Ripple Tea. She has participated in the popular reality showNingalkkum Aakaam Kodeeshwaran on Asianet.
